A minimalistic program with software dependencies
The application is delivered as a single file, which you can open if you have Java Runtime installed on your computer. After you double-click on the archive, you will be able to perform quick searches.
The entire interface is summed up to a single search tab. You can press the keyboard shortcut (Windows+Z) to open it. After you hit the first two letters, you will get a list of suggestions, and you can open the desired one. You can also access the application from the system tray of your computer.
Create a list of your preferred applications
The software enables you to gain quicker access to some of your apps. However, you must manually configure the program to do so. You open the configuration document, and you read the instructions to add custom entries. It goes without saying that some users will face some difficulties in getting things right.
The tool can also be used to perform quick calculations and other adjacent operations. You can open the document in its location with CTRL+Enter, preview details on the entry with Shift+Enter, or just open it with the default program by hitting the Enter button.

Its configuration process is tedious, and the minimalistic interface provides too few options to become of real use. TraySearch is free, yet it might prove more trouble than it is worth.
