Type is a professional application whose purpose is to help designers create and edit OpenType fonts, namely TrueType and PostScript fonts.
Although it comes bundled with many editing tools, the user interface is clean and straightforward.
You can create a new font from scratch or import information from OTF, TTF, or TTC file format for editing the current content.
The program gives you the possibility to pick the desired font (OpenType or TrueType) and provide details about the family name, subfamily, full name, and copyright.
You can choose between a wide range of Unicode characters, draw straight or curved corners, and smooth curves, insert rectangles, circles, ellipses, and lines, as well as use several drawing tools, such as pen, freehand pen, glue, and ruler.
What’s more, you can rotate, skew, or stretch the components, select a color for the current glyph, perform search operations, view the kerning pairs for the current glyph, go to the previous or next glyph, and zoom in or out.
Type lets you undo or redo your actions, perform basic editing operations (copy glyph or paste metrics), insert a background image (e.g. JPG, GIF, PNG, PSD), as well as use the auto-tracer for tracing graphs by cropping certain regions, selecting the black and white thresholds, and setting the parameters for obtaining the best trace.
Other notable characteristics worth mentioning are represented by the possibility to import vector graphics from SVG files, check the glyph information (e.g. type, total nodes, contours), preview the glyph or text, and build user-defined action scripts, which can be applied to the glyphs or entire font.
Last but not least, you are allowed to export data to OTF or TTF file format or save it as a template (GFS file format), use hotkeys for a better control over the entire process, copy, duplicate, or rename glyphs, and automatically create composite glyphs.
During our testing we have noticed that Type carries out a task very quickly, provides excellent output results, and no errors showed throughout the entire process.
As a conclusion, Type proves to be a reliable application that bundles many useful features for helping you generate and edit fonts, and is suitable especially for professional users.
