SimpleTAG Description

Developed in Java, SimpleTAG is an approachable application that facilitates a simple means for editing the ID3 tags of your audio tracks, as long as they have the MP3 or OGG Vorbis format.

It’s useful when you’re planning to copy a music collection to an MP3 player after sorting all artist information.

Java-based tool with a simple GUI

As long as you have Java and Apache Maven installed on your computer, there’s no need to set up anything else. You can copy the downloaded files to a local or removable drive to launch the program with minimum effort. More importantly, it doesn’t make any changes to the Windows registry.

SimpleTAG is packed in a clean and intuitive interface. After importing audio tracks, it’s possible to examine information concerning the track number, title, artist, album name and artist, year, genre, length, size, and number of containing covers.

Manage audio tags and rename files

Any of these tags can be edited or removed, while missing ones can be filled with new data. Furthermore, you can edit lyrics and artwork, as well as perform an automatic Google and local disk search to track down missing album covers. Batch processing is supported, which means that it’s possible to tag multiple audio tracks at the same time.

There’s also a file renamer integrated into the utility, which enables you to define the renaming pattern with the help of regular expressions. Tools for automatically adding numbers to the tracks and automatically completing missing tags are available.

Evaluation and conclusion

It didn’t put a strain on the machine’s performance in our tests. We haven’t encountered any stability issues, as it didn’t hang, crash or prompt errors. Its interface could use some improvements, though, and SimpleTAG comes with prerequisites.
