DAR Description

Keeping files and other important data safely backed-up is an imperious task these days and one that might take users a considerable time if improper resources are used.

DAR is a command-line based application that offers people backup and archival processes for large live filesystems.

Being a filesystem-independent and cross platform tool, it enables people to backup and restore full filesystems into larger or smaller partitions, from one partition to several ones, from a filesystem type to another and vice versa.

Users must be aware though, that DAR is not a boot loader or an operating system and it does not create or format partitions. DAR uses a filesystem for creating an archive, which can then be split into several files, whose size is user-defined.

The archive files can then be stored an almost any device or medium, such as CDs, DVDs, USB keys, hard disks or even tapes. Several options are available, allowing one to perform full, incremental, differential or decremental backups.

Recording of the files that have been removed since the last backup is also available, which leads to the restoration of a system to get the exact same state it was at the time of the backup.

The application can run on a live filesystem and detect when file changes occur, in order to request user permission for proceeding with retries.
