BestCrypt by Jetico is a commercial encryption suite designed to protect your data through strong encryption. It’s known for transparent on-the-fly encryption (OTFE), which means you can encrypt/decrypt data automatically as it’s being read or written—no need for manual encryption steps.
🔐 What BestCrypt Can Do
- Create encrypted virtual drives (containers).
- Encrypt entire partitions or physical disks (including boot/system drives with BestCrypt Volume Encryption).
- Supports many encryption algorithms (AES, Serpent, Twofish, etc.).
- Works on Windows, Linux, and macOS (features vary slightly).
🧰 Key Components
- BestCrypt Container Encryption – Encrypts files in virtual disk containers.
- BestCrypt Volume Encryption – Encrypts full volumes (entire HDD/SSD), including boot/system partitions.
🧪 How to Use BestCrypt Container Encryption
🔹 1. Install BestCrypt
- Download from: https://www.jetico.com
- Choose BestCrypt Container Encryption
- Available for Windows, Linux, and macOS
🔹 2. Create a New Encrypted Container
- Launch BestCrypt Control Panel
- Click
New Container - Set:
- Container name & location (e.g.,
Documents.bc) - Size (e.g., 1 GB)
- Encryption algorithm (AES-256 is common)
- Password (very important—no recovery if lost)
- Container name & location (e.g.,
- Click
Finish
BestCrypt creates a file that acts like a secure “drive”.
🔹 3. Mount the Container
- Select the container file in BestCrypt
- Click
Mount→ Enter your password - It appears as a new drive letter (e.g.,
Z:on Windows)
🔹 4. Use It Like Any Drive
- You can now read/write files to the encrypted container
- Everything inside is encrypted automatically
🔹 5. Dismount When Done
- Right-click →
Dismount - Keeps data secure until next mount with password
🔐 BestCrypt Volume Encryption (Full Disk)
This is more advanced and potentially risky if used incorrectly. Always back up your data first.
Steps:
- Open BestCrypt Volume Encryption tool
- Select disk or partition to encrypt
- Choose encryption algorithm and password
- Follow wizard to encrypt (may require reboot for system drive)
This encrypts all data, including operating system files. Password is required at boot.
🔑 Security Features
- Pre-boot authentication for system drives
- Keyfiles and two-factor authentication support
- Resistant to cold boot and brute-force attacks
- Wipe deleted files and free space (Jetico BCWipe integration)
🧠 Tips
- Use strong passwords — No recovery without it.
- Backup container files — if corrupted or deleted, recovery is impossible.
- Enable backups and key management if available (enterprise versions offer more options).
- Don’t store password/key on the same device.
💰 Licensing
- Not free. Has a trial period.
- Licenses available for personal and enterprise use.
- Alternatives (if you’re looking for free/open-source):
- VeraCrypt (free, open-source)
- LUKS (Linux full-disk encryption)
- BitLocker (Windows Pro/Enterprise only)
