X Model Viewer Description

If you work as a 3D modeler, you probably appreciate the importance of having the right tools for the job, especially since software assistance is vital in the 3D modeling field.

X Model Viewer is a lightweight application that enables you to view 3D models on your computer without sacrificing too many resources.

View 3D models

This application enables you to view 3D models on your computer, but, unfortunately, there is not much elbow room, since there are not many supported formats. You can only view 3D models that are of the DirectX (.X) format.

Also, you can render a few predefined objects by navigating to the “Primitives” menu and selecting your desired item from that list, be it a sphere, a cube, a cylinder, a cone or 3D text.

Clumsy controls

X Model Viewer features controls that are far from being optimized. During our testing, trying to rotate a 3D object in order to explore it thoroughly was impossible, as zooming in would bring the object too close and zooming out would carry it far from our point of view.

Keyboard controls are not functional and rotating the object is difficult as well, since the sensitivity is rather high. You can enable or disable a few options for displaying your object such as wireframe, bounds, transparency, ghost, cull and animate.

Counter-intuitive interface

The application’s interface is far from being perfect, as its main window is launched in full-screen mode by default and there is no way for you to minimize or resize it.

You can, however, view the number of polygons and customize your object by changing its color, loading a texture, changing the light mapping and modifying ambient details such as color, color light and backdrop color.

Lightweight 3D model viewer for DirectX format files

To wrap it up, X Model Viewer is a rudimentary application that can help you view DirectX (.X) files on your computer. It comes with a plain, unattractive and counter-intuitive interface, clumsy controls and packs a few example files so you can test its capabilities without loading your own documents.
