Almost every blockbuster or TV show that comes out is in English. Chances are you can’t turn up the volume to understand anything, or simply don’t know English so well. Subtitles save the day and it’s a time-consuming process to create them. Given the right applications, such as Womble EasySub, this can become a simple activity, because of the neat built-in functions.
Intuitive design makes it easy to use
At a first look, the application resembles a common video editor, with most of the space taken up by the preview area, timeline editor, and table of contents. This makes accommodation easy, especially the timeline that offers neat methods to place and align subtitles to the second.
However, you need to load a video first of all, with the possibility to load a CD/DVD, or a local file under formats like MPG, VOB, DAT, VRO, REC, TS, AVI, MP4, MVB, MPV, and MBS. This is either done through the open dialog or dragging the file over the main window.
Sure enough, you need to get a pair of headphones ready, because there’s no built-in algorithm to detect voice, let alone translate it. What you have to do is start the video, listen for speech parts, and pause when these are encountered.
Edit and export options
The timeline is used to create subtitle dialog lines. Dragging the slider over a distance determines the subtitle length, which can be tweaked later on either through the same slider, or via start and end time values. Fine tuning can be done by playing a subtitle zone on repeat.
Editing options give you the possibility to fully change subtitle font, color, size, and position. Several preset alignment options are at a mouse click-away, with settings to also set number of lines.
Pressing the Export VOB button is not quite what you’d expect, because it doesn’t just deliver the subtitle itself, but forcefully integrates it in the movie. To get the SRT/SPU file, you need to press the adjacent button to access the subtitle manager and export it from there.
