Windows 10 Virtual Desktop Enhancer Description

If you find yourself among those who like their workspace to be clean and well-organized, you probably already discovered the advantages of Windows’ virtual desktops. The Windows 10 Virtual Desktop Enhancer brings to the table additional features that allow you to take full advantage of this feature and, at the same time, customize your experience.

Manage all the virtual desktops with ease

Created with AutoHotKey, the application does not require installation. As soon as you launch it, it opens in the system tray, showing the name of the currently active desktop on the screen. No standard interface is available, but you can manage all your virtual work areas by right-clicking on the tray icon.

Working with Windows 10 Virtual Desktop Enhancer is not difficult at all, but you should take the time to go through the ‘readme’ file once to know how to use its most powerful feature: the shortcuts for managing the virtual desktops.

Define custom hotkeys and personalize workspaces

As there is no standard GUI, there is another way to tamper with the application’s settings and configure its behavior. The ‘settings.ini’ file is where you can manage the default number of desktops, handle tooltips (the small notification box that shows you the workspace name when switching desktops) or disable them for good, and customize the key combinations.

There are options that allow you to pin or unpin a window or an application and open the desktop manager. Switching to another desktop or moving a window to another desktop using hotkeys is also possible. To change the default values, you must enter a keyboard shortcut modifier by combining one or more keys out of Ctrl, Shift, Alt or Win, and press this combination along with the corresponding identifier key (for instance, Left and Right arrows for the previous and the next desktop, respectively). A much more convenient way to change the desktop is to scroll your mouse wheel while over the taskbar.

Additionally, you can personalize each workspace with a different name and a different wallpaper, be it a picture or a solid color. As a suggestion, both the name and the wallpaper should be visible int he tooltip that appears momentarily when switching desktops, so that the workspaces can be identified easier.

An overall good virtual desktops manager

If you like working with multiple desktops, there are a few handy features that make Windows 10 Virtual Desktop Enhancer worth your while. For instance, the number of the current desktop is shown in the tray icon.

Overall, the application behaved fine during our tests and proved to come in handy when working with multiple applications that require additional desktop space. The only thing that could be looked at as a ‘drawback’ is having to work with an .ini file rather than a standard GUI.
