StepVoice Recorder Description

StepVoice Recorder is a lightweight software application whose purpose is to help you record audio streams from any sound source, like microphone, line-in, audio/video playback, and Internet streaming. The audio streams are exported to MP3 file format.

Minimalist layout

You are welcomed by a small panel that embeds the recording controls directly in the main window. The GUI cannot be described as intuitive because some buttons are too small and it’s difficult to guess their exact function.

However, there’s support for a help manual that provides information about the utility’s capabilities. The program can also be controlled via the command-line console.

Recording capabilities

By default, StepVoice Recorder uses your configured sound device for the audio recording process. You can alter this setting by opening the system audio properties panel via the tool’s interface.

The application gives you the possibility to select the recording level for better quality. The level is displayed directly in the main window using the peak/wave visualization mode.

What’s more, you are allowed to adjust the volume, pause or stop the recording process, as well as play, pause or stop the recording.

General configuration settings

You can select the playback and recording device, allow multiple instances of the utility, automatically set the recording frequency or specify a custom value, and alter the MP3 bitrate and channels.

StepVoice Recorder offers you the option to schedule recording tasks at a custom time, run an external file when the recording is activated, stop the process at a user-defined time, as well as shut down the computer or close the recorder at the end of the job.

Other important tweaks worth being mentioned enable you to pause or stop the recording when silent passages are detected (you may configure the detection time and threshold level), as well as set up file naming rules for the recordings.

Bottom line

All things considered, StepVoice Recorder comes packed with several useful features which are limited to the field of recording, namely scheduler and silence detection. It records directly to a single file format (MP3) and can be used for quick recording sessions. However, you still need to appeal to other third-party programs to edit and burn audio data.
