Referer Control Description

Referer Control is a simple extension for Chrome that enables you to change what gets sent as a HTTP referer to other websites by forging data and testing it with various site.

Understanding HTTP referers

The HTTP referer is an HTTP header field that checks the identity of the webpage that linked to the requested resource. Therefore, checking the HTTP referer lets the newly accessed webpage see who made the request.

As an example, clicking a hyperlink in a web browser makes a request to the server that hosts the resource linked to the hyperlink. This request holds the referer field, which gives away the page the user was on before accessing the new address. This information can be used to identify where users are visiting from, which can be quite useful for targeted advertising.

Control referers

As you have probably guessed by taking a look at its name, Referer Control can help you control what information is sent by the HTTP referer by modifying data globally or using a per-site basis.

If you’re using a per-site method, it is possible to set the referer to be sent in multiple ways. For instance, you can hide the page you’re coming from, hide that you come from a specific site, filter third party requests or interpret your filter as a regular expression.

Additional options

It is possible to choose from three referer options. Therefore, you can whitelist sites by not changing the referer, set up a custom referer to send or refuse to send any referer at all by blocking it. This app also enables you to block JavaScript referers and test your current settings.

In order to test your referers, you can navigate to the “test your site filter” section and typing the website you want to test against and the used filter. Site filters can be imported or exported, as well.

Lightweight referer manager for Chrome

To sum it up, if you’re looking for a way to spoof your referers or block them altogether, you might consider using Referer Control, as it packs a wide range of functions that can be useful to your needs.
