Multi-highlight Description

Picture the following scenario: you’re currently intensely researching for an important essay or article. You’ve finally found the information you were looking for, but you need a visual queue that will help you focus on the important parts.

This is where Multi-highlight might be able to lend a helping hand by allowing you to highlight multiple words in a web page.

Nothing unusual about the extension’s deployment and placement

The extension can be deployed just like any other Chrome add-on, with no more than a single mouse click from its Chrome Web Store listing. As most extensions, it lives in Chrome’s top taskbar, on the right side of the address bar.

Click the extension’s compact icon and start adding multiple English words separated by a space. You will notice that the extension clearly highlights your words using a seemingly random set of colors.

Highlight multiple words with the help of this uber-simplistic Chrome add-on

Your highlighted keywords are stored so each time you open the webpage, the extension will automatically do its thing without your intervention. Furthermore, it also automatically refreshes the highlighting once the web page content has been changed.

Quite conveniently, you can enable or disable the extension via a small switch button on the upper-right part of its compact and resizable UI. Without a doubt, this is a useful extension, just as long as don’t ask too much of it. Unavoidably, it does not take too long until you can easily see the add-ons functional limitations.

A useful extension that could do with some more options

For example, the most annoying thing about it is the fact that it uses random colors to highlight words and that it does not allow you choose your own. This is not really a problem when you’re highlighting three, four, five, and even six words but, once you go above that number, things will soon become confusing, defeating the whole purpose. Also take into account that the extension is a bit “case sensitive”.

While we’re on the subject, we would also like to point out that Multi-highlight does not work with partial matches. Last but not least, it would have also been great if the extension would integrate with Chrome’s contextual menu. It would have made it easier for you to select a word and add it to the extension’s list with just a few mouse clicks.

Useful, but annoyingly limited

Finally, Multi-highlight is a helpful extension that can be used successfully, despite its limited functionality but just as long as you don’t work with a handful of highlighted words. We will end by saying that it’s a real shame that the extension is not actively supported/developed, as with some more features and bit of attention to detail, it could easily become one of the most useful Chrome extensions.
