Mindterm Description

Mindterm is a Java-based software application that implements SSH protocols that offers support for several advanced features, such as tunnellng, file transfer, along with SOCKS and HTTP proxies.

No installation necessary, aside from Java

There is no setup pack involved, which makes Mindterm (almost) portable. As long as you have Java installed on the computer, you can save the program files to any part of the hard drive and just click the executable to run the tool. Another important aspect worth taking into account is that it does not modify Windows registry entries, so it doesn’t increase the risk of system stability issues.

Connect to a server and configure settings

The GUI is user-friendly, represented by a normal window with a clear-cut structure, where you can open multiple protocols and connect to a server by specifying the name, user name, identity and authentication method (e.g. public key, secure ID, crypto card).

What’s more, you can apply a proxy configuration and manage security features when it comes to the protocol (SSHv1, SSHv2) and host key type (RSA, DSA), along with the client-to-server and server-to-client cipher, Mac and compression mode.

Mindterm lets you generate a publickey keypair and edit its settings later, print the screen or buffer, use a search function when dealing with large amounts of data, save passwords, as well as enhance the app’s functionality via plugins.

Evaluation and conclusion

There were no kind of stability issues throughout our testing, since the program did not hang, crash or pop up error messages. It leaves a small footprint on system performance, thanks to the fact that it needs low CPU and RAM to work properly. All in all, Mindterm proves to be a pretty resourceful SSH client for Java users.
