Microsoft R Open Description

R for Windows is a statistical language developed for complex data analysis purposes, and it includes a series of effective tools for data manipulation, calculation and graphical display.

Based on the aforementioned distribution system, Microsoft R Open is an interesting piece of software that aims to be an improvement in various key areas.

The inner working of an enhanced R environment

For instance, thanks to its comprehensive math libraries (BLAS/LAPACK libraries), it brings multi-threaded computation capabilities to R. In addition, it bundles a default CRAN repository for increased all round predictability.

This specific CRAN repo also contains a so-called “checkpoint” package which makes it a bit easier for you to write reproducible R code by opening up new possibilities of retrieving the exact version of various required packages.

As far as MRO and MRS are concerned, these can do almost everything that R can do. In a nutshell, the MRS component solves one of the biggest “issues” usually associated with R, namely it allows you to manage and handle datasets and modes a bit better, while the MRO is mostly there for ironing out most of the problems associated with speed.

A few words on its installer and the R for Windows-specific user interface

Microsoft R Open sports a comprehensive yet quite intuitive installer which bundles all the necessary elements, such as R for Windows, MRO, and MRS, the necessary math libraries, as well as Visual C/C++ Runtime versions.

As you can imagine, most of these changes are mostly under-the-hood. That said, upon launching Microsoft R Open, you are greeted by the same R console and overall UI you are used to finding in R for Windows.

Enhanced R data analysis environment which now benefits from multi-threaded performance

Taking everything into account, Microsoft R Open is a highly useful tool for any data scientist looking to enhance its workflow and user experience with R for Windows.
