MegaDownloader is an unofficial client for the MEGA online sharing services that allows you to download files from MEGA links, as well as to watch online videos without the need of a browser.
There’s no shortage of services similar to MEGA on today’s market, each one boasting a number of both free and paid plans for online storage purposes. For the most impressive of them, at least one desktop client has been developed, be it an official or unofficial release.
As far as the MEGA service is concerned, we’ve managed to identify two clients with two different purposes: the first one is the company’s sync application – MEGASync, which allows you to upload files to the cloud, while the second one and the unofficial version is MegaDownloader serves to download files from the service.
If you expect to use MegaDownloader without a MEGA account, that’s not possible. One needs to be provided in order to start using the application, this being the first field you are asked to fill in when you launch the application.
The program is wrapped up inside a simple design, so eye candying elements are not to be expected. Nevertheless, functionality is not in any way affected by its rather plain appearance, for the feature set is nicely tied together inside a few menus and buttons.
Being equipped with a clipboard sniffer, the application automatically identifies MEGA links, spearing you the effort of adding them to the queue yourself, although this is also possible via a dedicated dialog.
There’s also the possibility to watch MEGA videos, but you need to enable the streaming function for this to become available (VLC is required for the operation).
As far as options are concerned, you can customize settings such as extraction priority, speed limitations, number of parallel downloads, packet and disk buffer size – a few essentials of any download manager.
Overall, MegaDownloader stands out as a reliable client for users of the MEGA online service. Despite being an unofficial release, there are no major complaints concerning its functionality.
