Java SIDPlay Description

Initially, Java SIDPlay started out as a simple solution for those who wanted to play SID audio files the same way they have been played using the Commodore 64. During its development, features have been enhanced, added and now its become a full featured emulator for the above mentioned computer model.

A good looking restoration of the popular machine

From the moment you run it, Java SIDPlay displays a fully functional model of the Commodore 64 with which you can interact right away. Within the PC recreation you are able to load tapes, disks and cartridges, providing you have their digital equivalents.

If not, Java SIDPlay comes with a very handy and well thought out feature that can save you countless hours. Meaningly, with a simple click it downloads and inserts into the application a very large number of SID tracks, programs and games that were specific to its time period.

To simplify things even more, you won’t even have to go through the trouble of manually installing and configuring the downloaded packages as that is done automatically. Moreover, accessing and running or playing the games and songs is simple thanks to the well structured interface of the application.

Playback SID files from a large collection

As mentioned before, Java SIDPlay comes with collection of songs in SID format which you can download from an online source and load into the application. Grabbing them takes a couple of minutes but once it’s done, you get all the SID files neatly organized by category and then alphabetized.

It creates categories such as ‘Demos’, ‘Documents’, ‘Games’ and ‘Musicians’, which contain either simple sounds or full length songs that can considered psychedelic in some cases.

A great software for nostalgics everywhere

Commodore 64 or C64 was very popular back in the day due to its great flexibility and low price. Designed for business purposes, besides development tools and office productivity software, games were of course made available.

Just like with SID files, Java SIDPlay can download a very large number of games that were available and allows you to have fun with them. Since the application is meant to reproduce the Commodore experience, even the load time for them is the same, which by today’s standards and technology would seem exaggerated even though we’re talking about a minute or two.

Conclusion

Two wrap it up, though a lot has remained unsaid about additional features and functions, it’s safe to say that if you want to see an accurate example of how computer technology was in the 80’s, then you should definitely try Java SIDPlay.
